Theologians in the Reformed tradition have long differentiated Christ’s incarnation into two states, based on Philippians 2:6-11: His state of humiliation (Phil. 2:6-8) and His state of exaltation (Phil. 2:9-11).
Christ’s humiliation
Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry was a display of divine humility. In every aspect of that ministry we see the humble Jesus—from his expectant mother being forced to give birth to Him in a stable for animals since there was no room for her and her husband in the inn (Luke 2:7) to His burial in the grave of another (Matt. 27:57-60). He was raised in humble circumstances—His mother’s husband, Joseph, was a carpenter, not a man of influence or wealth according to this world’s standards (Matt. 13:55).
